No, seriously.

I started playing MKO during the Beta, but my character was deleted due to inactivity, and I didn't get very far anyway. I've started over, playing a magician in Krondor. Here are my questions.

1: Am I missing something, or are there no healing vials and such around MKO? I'm used to other IRE games, and I haven't seen much in the way of curatives.

2: What's a decent way to make some coin? No, not ratting, and I suck at fishing. Is buying and selling comms between comm shops a viable source of income? Any quests around the city worth doing that might net me some silver, at least?

3: Is theft rampant here? If so, anything in particular I can do to prevent it?

Any other tips? Suggestions and such are fantastically welcome.

Correct. Healing is done through some priest skills, but primarily through natural regeneration, liberal use of OVERDRIVE (which is granted via a jewel tattoo if you haven't yet learned that skill), and bandages. OVERDRIVE, or just OD, is the mainstay of health regeneration, especially while in combat. It transforms your adrenaline into health, and as you gain adrenaline from hitting things, you can use it pretty much indefinitely, assuming you are bashing a level appropriate target.

[edit] And for curing afflictions, you can use INNER FOCUS, which also draws on adrenaline.

Getting coin from mob corpses is useful, and there are some NPCs which will take corpses of particular bashing targets for coin (such NPCs exist for the imps in the Hadati imp caves and the swamp bugs, to give examples of some of the newbie-ish friendly bashing areas). There are a number of lucrative quests that generate coin, as well, though none of the ones in Krondor generate a ton of coin. Try exploring some other towns.

Selling commodities is generally not the best way to go.

Not rampant, but it is certainly possible and something you should guard against. As a Krondorian, you'll want to be wary of a few Sar-Sargothians who have a reputation for robbing younger players. For one, keep most of your money in a bank (such as Krondor's city bank). If you don't have it on you, it can't be stolen. There are various skills you can use to mitigate theft, and speaking with someone in your guild is probably a good idea. In short, the rogue skill HOSTAGE allows them to steal an item from you, but you can WRITHE or CONTORT (both fighting skills) to try and get away. Rogues typically use HOSTAGE as a prelude to EXECUTE, which doesn't rob you but does kill you.

Magicians and priests both have a way of bending you to their will (web of compulsion and divine command, respectively), though it is possible to reflexively REJECT them before they can get around to making you give them your stuff.

So if you have the skills and implement them properly, you can be fairly safe from theft. It is still possible to be robbed, though, in a group situation - awhile back I was attacked by 3 or 4 enemy players, and I wasn't able to get away. Rather than kill me, they disabled me and stole some of my stuff (you can't CONTORT or REJECT if they are able to e.g. break all of your limbs). But that is fairly rare, and the good news is that as a magician, you don't really need any really expensive items (while soldiers often invest in quality weapons).

^What Akaxi said. <3 Akaxi.

There are quite a few good quests too(honestly, you will find them if you look around a bit), as well as the hunting areas that will net you a decent profit.

And don't give up on fishing! It IS hard at first, but it does get easier as you get into the swing of things, and you can eventually get some more bound credits for working on it.

And yes, I would advise taking your time to see how a thief would try to steal from you(with all the classes mentioned above, especially mages, as they can be amazingly fast in anachronize with the stealing.), and working out something to where they won't get anything... because I've known some to even try to steal from you in the middle of battle(for no other reason than the lolz of it). I know there is likely someone around Krondor that can sit an take the time with you to explain things in more detail.

Welcome! and good luck.

1. No healing vials and afflictions are not cured with herbs. As Akaxi mentioned, the ability in fighting known as Overdrive is used to heal oneself whilst in combat/hunting, using 5% of your adrenaline per use. For afflictions, the Inner Focus ability is used for curing. If you don't have the lessons to invest, you can purchase the jewel tattoo to use overdrive and the crown, sceptre and heart tattoos to cure your afflictions (HELP TATTOOS for more information)

2. It depends heavily on your level. At low levels ratting probably is one of the most efficient ways, if you factor in the simplicity of it. At higher levels there are a few hunting areas where the coin drop is good and you get paid for handing in corpses. Akaxi mentioned the Imp caves which is a great area for lowbies. Just make sure that you are of a sufficient level before jumping right at the imps as they can overwhelm you with sheer numbers.

3. Theft is present, but nowhere near the levels you would find in certain other IREs like Achaea. As long as you have proper reflexes you should be safe. If you're really paranoid selfishness is not that high up in fighting either.

Tips: Earning coin is much easier/faster at higher levels and the stat points you gain by leveling up are invaluable anyway, along with the lessons + free credits. Don't be shy about leveling your newbie! smile.gif

So, I think hijacking this thread is more valuable than posting a new one of my own. Here's the story:

I recently started playing again, after a super-extended break. Unsurprisingly, that means that all of my equipment has decayed, and unfortunately at the time I ceased playing I had around 10 silver lying around. I'm running into an issue when it comes to earning enough coin to actually -start- playing again. Without a weapon, killing vermin in cities is horrifically slow. Is there a relatively simple way to earn enough coin to purchase a sword/etc? After that, I suspect the investments will return far more quickly.

If you're in a guild/clan, see if anyone will lend you a weapon. Usually they will.

Otherwise, go for quests. The starting quests in Sedia Tunnel are trivially easy, can only be done once, and earn you about 30 silver. Ravensburg, near Krondor, has some very profitable pacifist quests too.

Yes, you can do quests. You can either explore the various towns and greet the denizens, or if you ask people (ICly) for help, they can point you to a fairly lucrative quest or two.

Alternatively, you can ask the members of your guild for some aid. Regardless of the guild you're in, I suspect you'll find that people will be helpful in getting you back on your feet (e.g. Akaxi routinely makes decent weapons and armor for other Pathfinders at no charge - and is far from rare in that practice).

Interacting with other people on a Role-Playing game. Who would've thought?

Also: Thanks!

There's a quest where you get 90 silver for killing 3 creatures, it's quite funny to kill them all with a pathetic punch repeatedly.

Edit: Pointless now, dropped to 20 silver

There's a quest that nets you 5 gold. I can't quite remember where but it's one of the towns to the west. Anyway, that is a one-time deal, however. It's non-repeatable, so definitely make the earnings count, it's no grab bag. Still, that's not half bad! Smile

It's also a place where I still need to map for esplorarz rankings. :ninja:

It is Jonril, and requires you to kill 3 cockroaches, 1 bear and 1 goblin (not the wimpy sedia kind), so you might need a weapon for it.

Also, aren't there super cheap weapons available for those that find them in just such a situtation? Yes they are probably super horrible stat-wise, but its better than punching. They are in the blacksmith shop and there are 3-4 different weapons for maybe 1 silver each.

This thread was created a while back. Newbie weapons at the Smithy came around just about a month ago.
