Nudity at Eledhel weddings.

Please can I have chapter and verse from someone with the books to hand on this point.

I'm calling bs.  I don't remember that from the books and I would have done.

I'm going to second your motion, there. I have no recollection of anything like that and I like to think I have a fair memory for details from the books.

Gianna has quoted chapter and verse. Or rather Magician: Master - the marriage between Tomas and Aglaranna.

I checked my copy and this is the relevant bit:

Quote:

The ceremony took place in a quiet glade, with Aglaranna and Tomas exchanging vows before Tathar. No one else was there, as was the elven way, while they pledged their love. Tathar invoked the blessings of the gods and instructed them on their duty, one to the other.

When the ceremony was complete, ...

After that they mount elf-steeds and head back to Elvandar. There is no mention of getting dressed or undressed. This is Magician: Master, chapter 13, about halfway through.

So I'm interested to hear what Gianna was referencing.

As an aside, the quote has an interesting example of the eledhel paying enough homage to the gods invoke their blessings during a wedding ceremony. Though you could chalk that up to Feist being inconsistent, I suppose.

ayup, just read the bit too, there's not much to the ceremony at all and no mention of nekkidness. And we can chalk it down to Feist's inconsistency.

Interesting.

To be fair to Gianna, I'm not sure she went out and checked.  I think that was something of a guess.

Kando - inconsistency? - is there elven nudity elsewhere?

I think he was specifically referring to the 'homage to the gods' bit I mentioned. Laughing out loud

I'm trying to remember now. I know I heard it from more than one source on my Eledhel.  Could have sworn I checked it, but it's been long enough now that I really can't remember.  And I do not have time to go through the books again.  I wonder if there was a change between editions? But still, I should have caught it.

No worries! There is an extended edition of Magician that I don't have, and while I don't recall the list of changes mentioning anything along these lines, it is such a minor detail in the scope of the overall story that it might not have made the list.

I can't think of any other eledhel weddings in any of the books. If anyone has the "author's preferred edition" of Magician, I'd be grateful if you could take a peek.

As an aside, I looked in to getting a copy for myself (my paperbacks of Magician are pretty darn old) and apparently they're out of print and go for a tidy sum on Ebay etc. Sad

Oh snap, thanks for the link. They didn't have it but they suggested another site that does. I'll slap that baby on my Amazon wishlist. Smile

I have the author's preferred edition, there is no quote in their for nude weddings. I have just checked Queen Aglaranna's wedding scene aaaand to quote, this is the version in there, page 616:

"The ceremony took place in a quiet glade, with Aglaranna and Tomas exchanging vows before Tathar. No one else was there, as was the Elven way,  while they pledged their love. Tathar invoked the blessings of the gods and instructed them on their duty,  one to the other."

Then Tathar went on to tell them to ride back to Elvandar and they had a feast which lasted well in to the night, dwarves included.

I re-read the first few pages before and after, and there was nothing mentioned about them getting dressed or undressed. I've never read of any other Edhel marriages with nudism either, unless I skimmed over that part (Which I tend to do in parts I find boring).

Was the Queen and Tomas even an Eledhel wedding, that sounds more of the human thing going on there. I thought the Eledhel were considered wed after they Uh-hum got down and dirty.

As I quoted in my response, "As was the -elven- way"...so it was an elven marriage.

It also goes on to quote afterwards, that a second chair was placed in the elven council hall/chambers to acknowledge the consort's rank within Elvandar. Also, when Tomas calls on the elven steeds and he mounts one, Tathar tells him, "By no other way could you have shown so well, that you are now one of us".  Even though Tomas was the only part human/Valheru (In the timeline we are in), the Eledhel still considered him one of them.

You're probably thinking of the 'recognition', which is a tendency for eledhel to simply recognize their soulmate by looking at them, once they reach a certain age. But that doesn't obviate the act of going through a wedding ceremony.

Spoiler: Highlight to view

Also Aglaranna was a widow and widowed Elves will generally find Elves in a similar situation whom they are attracted to and try and build a life together from there like with Calin (Born Sterile as a result of Tomas and Aglaranna coupling) and his widowed Oceadel bride
